MUMBLES SEASEARCH OBSERVER COURSE MAY 22ND APRIL

Are you a local shore searcher or experienced snorkeller? I am running a 1 day Seasearch Observer course at Norton Village Hall on Sat 22nd April. This is an awesome opportunity to get involved in Marine Conservation, learn about marine life and how to record marine habitats and species on your dives/snorkels!

Seasearch Aim: To gather information on seabed habitats and associated marine wildlife in Britain and Ireland through the participation of volunteers. This involves people in conservation by providing training in recording and skills to provide quality assured data to partners (nature conservation bodies and wider scientific community) and raises awareness of marine life.

Date: Sat 22nd April, 9:00-16:30

Tutor: Matt Green

Booking: Confirm you want to book the course by emailing me (marinegreenphoto@gmail.com), I will send you a registration form with payment details.

Location: Norton Village Hall 6 Castle Rd, Mumbles, Swansea SA3 5TF

Cost: £50 (with option of inclusion of The Essential Guide to Rockpooling book for slightly extra)

Experience required: No experience or knowledge is required for the course. However, training or experience is required for snorkelling if that is how you plan to record afterwards (the course offered here is only covering marine ecology and recording).

The course is available to all.

Overview:

  • Introduction to Seasearch

  • Gain a basic grounding in marine recording

  • Learn how to recognise and classify marine habitats and species

  • Learn how to complete the Seasearch Observation Form

Qualification: At the end of the course, you'll get a Seasearch Qualification booklet. Once you have completed five forms from dives (two with a tutor available to help) you will be a qualified Seasearch Observer and able to take part in Seasearch activities locally and around the UK.

Why sign up: This is a really great opportunity to learn about local marine life. It will enhance your marine life experiences and give you the skills to record marine life. You will have the opportunity to go on Seasearch organised trips all around the UK and meet amazing people. There are a serious lack of records around Swansea and Gower so it is likely that when you survey a shore locally it will be the first ever time that area has been surveyed. All data you produce from this will be stored on national databases and used for conservation and species distribution maps which will aid our collective knowledge of marine life now and into the future.
